Heartstrings
an on-going series of trial and error
I have been growing up... it's a strained process. I've always been so dependent, I'm not good at being lonely. Moving away forced me to grow up, it forced me to confront my loneliness and I realized that I relied on others for my happiness. Being removed from my home and my support group put me in a dark place but it was necessary for my growth and my future.
The thought occurred to me that a lot of people my age are sacrificing their present happiness for their future happiness, it's what we have been told to do. I don't know how I feel about that. I want to prioritize my happiness, I want to bring light to my life now.
I want to find joy in my present without endangering my future and I made this project in response to that feeling to remind myself that as corny as it is, even when life pulls on your heartstrings, there is still light.
The irony is not lost on me that I have tried this project and fallen short of my goal twice now, but I still have plans. This sculpture has taught me a lot about the mediums I made it in so maybe this was how it was meant to be, an on-going series of trial and error.

Braille Series 2018
I dedicate this series to my friend Marie who has a degenerative disease that has been eating away at her vision since she was born. I had always felt bad when she would ask about my art and go to my shows for me but she couldn't interact with my work. I wanted to make a series that was accessible, something that was meant to be touched, something that couldn't be fully experienced by the eye alone.
